Most manufacturers of carpet recommend cleaning at least once per year and in fact, most require you to clean your carpet every 18 months by a professional carpet cleaning company that uses hot water extraction, or your warranty will be voided.

Today’s carpets are engineered to capture and hold particulate soils that may not be visible but can damage carpet due to their abrasive nature. Your carpet actually performs as a very good filter removing particulates from the air so that they do not become airborne. Just like any other type of filter, carpets need to be cleaned or a buildup of soil will occur.

1. Pre-Vacuuming
2. Application of a detergent pre-spray that will suspend the soils from the carpet fibers
3. Agitation of the pre-spray so that the detergent actually contacts the soils
4. Hot water rinsing using a high-efficiency, truck-mounted cleaning system
5. Grooming of the carpet fibers to provide for a uniform look
6. Drying – Carpets take up to 2 to 6 hours to dry completely, depending on the degree of soiling and type of carpet

Today’s carpets have built-in protection against most spots and stains, making cleanup easy and quick. As a carpet ages, this protection wears off, making removal of spills more difficult.

Some spills, such as hot drinks or pet urine, can break through the protective finishes on brand new carpets, causing stains that are difficult to remove. Color-added spots such as Kool-Aid™, mustard or red wine can actually dye your carpet fibers and are very difficult to remove.

Pet stains and odors

The severity of these odors is often underestimated by homeowners as they become somewhat desensitized to the smell over time. However on humid days or when there is an attempt to sell the home, the odor may become very apparent.

Over-the-counter products that are sprayed or sprinkled onto the carpet will usually only mask the smell for a short period of time. These odors can successfully be removed; however, it takes professional-strength products to counteract the odor. In severe cases, the backing of the carpet has to be treated along with the sub floor or concrete.

Protective Oversprays

Almost all new carpet has some type of protective overspray applied when it is manufactured. Whether it is 3M’s Scotchgard™, Dupont’s Teflon® or the carpet manufacturer’s own product, there is usually some type of protection applied at the mill.

You might remember when your carpet was new that any type of spill beaded up on the top of the carpet. You might also notice now that in the traffic areas of your carpet, spills no longer bead up and they tend to just soak through. This is happening because the mill applied oversprays that will wear off with foot traffic. This is why most manufacturers recommend a protective overspray be applied after cleaning to replace whatever has been taken off with wear.

In addition to protective oversprays resisting spills, they also help prevent the carpet from wearing. The majority of soil found in your carpet is known as particulate soil which would have been tracked in from outside. These soils act as sandpaper on your carpet fibers, causing them to abrade and wear out.
